Another possible option, have him see if he can get the 6 running decently, then that can be sold to fund the purchase of more parts. It doesn't sound like it would be a good candidate for turbo or supercharging if the intake leaking is such a problem.
I agree, he's not getting into legal trouble or getting anyone pregnant, so let him at it.
