I am not from the PNW but have spent quite a bit of time there in the past few years.
Leavenworth is a fantastic town. I usually rent a Jeep and have explored the Forest Service roads past Plain and Lake Wenatchee many times.
Cle Elum area (where Bob lives) is great as well. I plan on getting a place somewhere along the eastern slope of the Cascades in the next few years as a summer place.
