I'm not a biologist but I work at an aquarium, it is common among certain species of fish if there is no male available one of the females to biologically become a male and fertilize the other females.
I'm also a city boy but have spent time in the country, I presume the country boys have seen cattle and dogs have male on male sex... are they gay or just horny and no female was available?
Along those same lines in primates when an alpha male concurs another male it is common for the concurred male to take a submissive posture.
IMHO it is an anthropomorphize of behavior to fit the latest media buzz.
YMMV
