I totally went through this, get a correct tank or build your own that is for the most part correct.

Daves suggestion, although it will work, will be too high up and over the winter storage will leak down overflowing your crankcase and filling the the cylinders with oil. This won't really hurt anything, but will be a messy PITA when you go to start the engine come spring.
You could put a race sump in the front trunk, but even if you got a used sump cheap running the -12 and minimum return -16 hose from front to back will negate any savings.

Going with a /6 is not a cheap undertaking and most don't realize the engine is only part of the cost. I watched the 914world for sale section and got a new DWD tank, console and filler for $800 a few years back.
