Being right on the coast, Charlotte will be completely obliterated. The only dry space will be the top 5 floors of the Bank of America building.
I am not a weather girl, but here is my opinion:
Google and see how Charlotte fared after Hugo.
Hugo grew to a Cat 4 before it made landfall.
Hugo's main cell went straight across SC, and just east of Charlotte.
Mathew was up to a Cat 5, but I think is now a Cat 3 after passing over Haiti. As it moves through warm waters toward Florida, it could increase again.
Mathew is projected to run up the coast, so inland damages should be significantly less than when Hugo came through - however there could be much more coastal damage.
