What volatile political climate exists in China? I assure you, you can go to every major historical or cultural site there and, aside from the portrait of Mao on the front gate to the Forbidden City, you will see zero sign of politics. Since they don't have elections, you won't see any political tv commercials or yard signs either. There is zero anti-Americanism there. You won't meet a rude person. I can't think of a more stable, exciting place to visit than China. Been there four times and can't wait to go back.
