The news departments at ABC, NBC and CBS used to be a separate arm from the entertainment programs that had to generate revenue.
Commercial space sold on "I Love Lucy" had to support Lucy and Walter Cronkite.
Now news departments are supposed to earn a profit, hence the all out war to generate click bait. It's all about ratings.
