As others mentioned, it's probably a dying battery. The low/critital warnings are likely prompted when the battery reaches specific voltage levels. On a healthy battery, the predicted time-remaining will be fairly accurate.
With a bum battery, the voltage can drop off dramatically near the end, instead of taper off gradually.

I currently have the same issue with my phone. When new, the battery would still give me plenty of time when it reached 10%. Now, when it reaches 10% it will die completely within a matter of seconds if I don't plug it in immediately.
I still get a reasonable amount of time per charge, but it's noticeably less than when new, and it drops like a rock near the end now. Time for a new battery soon...
