I'm in with the others who state the correct answer of 60 for the problem written in the original post.
I fought similar issues when my son was in school. We went through this 5 times during his elementary and middle school years here in Oregon - he was brandished as "disruptive" and "argumentative" each time for correcting the teacher in class.
This same topic came up during a public Parent Advisory Council meeting and was raised by another parent. I threw the standard problem of "1 + 2 X 3 = ?" on the board. All faculty present answered "9". All professionals in the audience answered "7" correctly. Elementary (and some middle school teachers) for some reason were rationalizing that PEMDAS doesn't apply until you take an algebra course...
