Instead of a BB gun I first had a really cool Daniel Boon flintlock cap rifle. It fired caps and shot cork balls that you muzzle loaded it with. It even had a tamping rod to push the cork balls down into the barrel like a real muzzle loader.
One day while we were playing in the lots behind our house a kid from 3 blocks away had come over and was trying to bully the kids in the group. After about an hour of that he grabbed my rifle and ran home. I followed and found out where he lived, then went and got my Dad.
We went to the kids house. The parents just sat on the couch. He told them their kid had been bullying the other kids and stole my cap gun rifle. They said their kid wouldn't do that. He told the kid to get the rifle. The kid went to his room and came out with it. The parents said it was his. My Dad grabbed it and asked if their son's name was KENT, because my name was Kent and that is the name scratched on the butt of the gun. They said they just didn't know how their son got it. The kid just grinned.
My Dad asked if they were going to do anything about it. When they said no, what for? My Dad proceeded to grab the kid, whip off his belt and gave the kid a whipping until he started crying. Right in front of me and the parents. All the time telling the parents that lots of the neighbor kids come play in the vacant lots behind our house. And he would not put up with any of the kids being mean, bullying, or stealing from the other kids. And if the parents didn't make sure their kids behaved he would. And if their kid did anything like that again he would get more of the same. Then we left. Never saw the kid again.
Bullies didn't last long in our neighborhood.
If I had kids and tried to take care of bullies like my Dad did today, I would probably be in jail. I do know that it sure worked though.
