I managed an automotive accessory business back in the 80s and besides our walk-in showroom we had a very busy mail order dept. We shipped 800+ packages a day, all sizes from driving gloves to sets of wheels.
I negotiated between USPS, UPS and FedEx to get the absolute lowest price and played the three against each other to use one of them exclusively. UPS won. The ultimate cost to us was low enough to offer free shipping. In 1987 we were doing over a million dollars a month in sales with a 50%+ profit margin. Shipping cost was a drop in the bucket.
