As others have mentioned I think Wayne has made a considerable effort to make shipping as reasonable as possible. Comparing a company that does 130 billion dollars in revenue (amazon who owns zappos) to pelican is not a great direct comparison.
Sites like zappo's and amazon have skewed customer expectations for shipping speed and cost. I'm certainly guilty of being frustrated with the cost and amount of time it takes pelican to get things out. I think in large part it's because of my skewed sense of reality from frequently using those large internet retailers. That said I've wandered at times because shipping duration to the east coast is longer and more expensive than I want.
As an interesting fact. Do you know that Amazon prime costs amazon somewhere in the region of $300/customer? Also if you want to learn some crazy stuff about zappos read the book delivering Happiness by Tony Hsieh. He's a pretty cool dude, and the story is quite interesting. Or watch his talk at google which summarizes the book. Sorry for the tangent but it is a real interesting story:
