Those little Smiths are very nice, but man the trigger is great on Ruger's LCR. That said, I would NOT recommend anything under 3" for a first revolver (actually 4" is probably as short as you should go first). Those shorties take lots of practice, especially DAO. A 4" .357 is about as flexible a handgun as one could choose, a nice heavy one like a Ruger GP 100 or L frame Smith (586/686) either blued or stainless, and a Simply Rugged holster with the IWB straps and a good belt is probably what I'd suggest for shooting, home defense and possibly carrying. To conceal, you'd need to dress very intentionally, but it could be done. It'll be more accurate than the shooter, and will run for generations on anything from light .38's to full house .357's.
