Had a 76 914 2.0 that had the engine breathed on. Mechanic had raced them. Don't have any idea how much hp it made. Said it was hopped up as much as it could be before it started stretching jug bolts. It only did 0-60 in 9 seconds if it was in tune. It did do 130 and accelerated to it as fast as a 733 BMW from 55. At 130 my mechanic said it runs into aerodynamic drag that requires exponential hp to overcome.

The first weekend I had it I drove from OKC to Atlanta. The to the mountains in Tennessee, Bean Station for a family reunion. Then back to OKC. Was young and fearless. Bought it. That night it broke the shifter bracket off the transmission. Spent the next day getting that fixed. Got up early the next morning and took it on the trip.

In Tennessee on the way to Atlanta I was pulled over and ticketed. Was in an area where there was a lot of traffic and everyone including me was doing the then speed limit 55. Whistler (best at the time) radar detector didn't go off until we were both stopped. Gave me a ticket for 68 and told me since it was on the interstate and below 15 over Tennessee wouldn't report it. Said I was going 55. Said I could go to court in 30 days and radar did not stand and it would be dropped, but had to appear before a judge. I said so this is an out of state tourist tax. He just said have a nice trip and walked away. I didn't pay attention to the speed limits for the rest of the trip!

On the Drive home Sunday we were working out way up through a LOT of cars all bunched up. There was a 733 BMW with two girls doing the same as we were. When we got up to the front of all the cars there were 4 trucks keeping traffic back. They pulled into one lane and let us both by. Then closed the door behind us. We both immediately speed up to 130. She didn't try to drive the BMW any faster and it's a good thing because I had the 914 floored. I remember that her passenger was calmly reading a magazine while this was going on. My nephew was beside himself he was so excited. After about 10 minutes at that speed we started catching up with traffic and had to slow down again.

Later that afternoon my alternator belt broke just East of Clarksville, AR. Maybe it was the high speed run, I don't know. Wasted a lot of time driving around in Clarksville trying to find someone that would sell me a belt. All I could find was one place that had one, and he refused to sell it unless he mechanic installed it and that wouldn't be till Monday. Kinda pissed off decided to try to make it to Ft Smith before dark. Figured if I had to turn my 100 watt headlights on the battery would die before I got there. It was 60 miles to Ft Smith and 30 minutes till dark so was going to have to drive fast.

Not far out of Clarkville headed west for Ft Smith all the cars were in the right lane doing 55. Thought it was really convenient as I zipped by a mile and a half of cars doing 120. The 4th car from the front of the bumper to bumper line was an Arkansas HWY Patrol. My nephew was with me. As we wooshed by my nephew waved. I watched my mirror and we were over a mile ahead before he pulled into the left lane and 3 miles before we saw the bubblegums turn on. Then we lost sight.

Quickly did some calculations in my head and considering how far I would get ahead before he could reach any type of closing speed and the fact that he probably wouldn't go over 135 I would be in Ft Smith before he would even get close enough to see me. So I just keep cruzing.

Then missed the turn off for Ft Smith and had to take the next one. That exit you had to go down a mile to cross over the highway then come back a mile to take the on ramp to head back to the Ft Smith Exit. As we were going over the highway I could just barely see over the railing of the bridge. I noticed the patrol car lights a few hill tops away. Pulled over at the end of the bridge where the railing was solid and waited behind it. Sitting up in the seat we could just barely peer over the edge of the railing.

Sure enough here comes the patrol car barreling down the highway with lights but no siren. As soon as he passed we got back on the highway, made the Ft Smith exit and got off that highway at the frist place that had a motel as it had just gotten dark.

Ended up getting a belt put on at the AMCCO station next to the motel. I had gone in to get some cigarettes. Was complaining about not being able to find someone to sell me an alternator belt for my 914. The attendant a the gas station said those are just like Beetles, I got a belt and you just pop it on there, roll the car forward in 5th gear and it's on. Went and go the car, he popped a new belt on and we were off again.

We were a little apprehensive heading for the OK border, but didn't pass any patrol and made it the rest of the way home without incident.

Quite a first weekend of first Porsche ownership.
