Interesting. I'm a network guy, so when I see "router" I think or say "rout er". When I see something like "Route 66" I think I usually go with "root", but not always, or maybe I only think that because of the "root 66" song being mentioned in this thread. If I was going to say something like "the route that I took to get there," then I would think "rout"

Normally, the only time that I think of route or router being pronounced as root or rooter would be if i was conversing with someone that normally spoke British English vs American English.
