An important point to consider is that the oil tank is between the filter and the engine, i.e. The oil is pumped from the sump, through the filter, then to the tank, then sucked back through the pump to the engine. You want to make absolutely sure you don't contaminate it with the container used. I don't drive enough miles in a year to need a change, but do it anyway and use the old oil in my truck that burns it, and the lawn mower.
After I wrote this, I realized it might not be true on all models, but I know it is the case on 964s, except the turbos, which had a second filter. 993's have a second filter also.
