I have fond memories of the olden days when the speed limit was 55mph. Had a full size GMC Jimmy with a 250cuin inline 6 and was geared for it. It had gobs of torque and accelerated surprisingly quick up to 80mph. The gotcha was the top speed was 80mph floored at redline. It was a 1978 so it didn't have the giant 55 on the speedo.

Went from the Jimmy to my first Porsche while the limits were still 55mph. A 1976 914 2.0. It's speedo read much higher than 85 and also did not have the giant 55 itis. I traded in the Jimmy and remember them giving me $5500 for the Jimmy and the 914 was only $3000 so ended up getting the 914 and a check. That was also when I started driving on the highway with a radar detector.

Went from the 914 back to another GMC Jimmy, an 81, it didn't have the giant 55 either. It did only have a 305 V8 and couldn't go over 60mph due to lack of power. Going up hill with a head wind it did good to hold 50mph. It was probably the huge tires that were on it. Instead of going to smaller tires swapped out the anemic 305 for a hot rodded up 400 small block and that did the trick.

Traded that Jimmy in on a new 87 Jeep Cherokee, then a few months later a new 88 Jeep Cherokee Limited to get cruise control and a rear window defroster. Their speedos only went to 85. However, on a couple of occasions with the speedo pegged at 85 the distance traveled and the time it took calculated out to a bit over 140 mph. It felt really good to drop a couple of friends off at the airport in OKC, then pick them up as they walked out of the terminal expecting to hail a cab at DFW.
