On the shift seal> Get a clean pan, buy or clean one, dump the oil either save it or change it. I would suggest changing it. Oil is cheap compared to the tranny. While the oil is in this clean pan you can inspect it.
Remove the nose cone of the tranny, easily done and no risk of damaging the parts in removing the seal. There really is not enough room to safely use the drill and screw method.
