Our host has the "crossover to thermostat" hose for about $75, why bother with any fixes to your old hose. When installing the metal pipe end to the thermostat, don't even think of trying to remove the old nut on the thermostat with a wrench, too many folks have f-ed up the most likely seized aluminum thermostat threads that way! After all, that nut has probably not been removed from the thermostat for 36yrs or so. Just use a Dremel to CAREFULLY cut slots in the old nut in several places and hit it with a chisel to knock it off, then clean up the threads and screw on the new pipe with some anti seize compound.
