I can see relatives thinking that you had given tacit permission to post on Facebook considering it was obvious that it was close to the end, that you were going on a long-planned vacation where there would be little contact, and that you aren't taking your phone. I can see someone thinking that telling people you weren't taking your phone under the circumstances was you giving them permission to make the announcement as they saw fit if your mom passed away while you were gone.

Do remember to be generous in your feelings toward those who made the announcement. It was not their mother but they lost a loved one too. Not everyone reacts well under the stress of the loss of a loved one.
