It may have been DAT but from memory the cassettes looked like regular ones. Not 100% sure though.

"Metal" was just a different formulation of cassette tape. Regular tapes were iron oxide, then there was a 'chrome' oxide, and 'type 4 metal' tapes were actual metal particles. The idea being that different materials on the tape could achieve a higher frequency response.
