Exactly. Just saw the invoice above and noticed it's a convertible, making the "valuation" even more optimistic.
OP: It wasn't a $40k car to begin with. The asking price of $24k is roughly $4k below book, not $15k below. Considering the salvage title, it would still be $6-$8k too high @ $24k, even if the seller had fixed everything.
You want to over-pay for a salvage flood car AND be on the hook for a new engine, plus potential electrical and biological (bacteria/mold) issues? Ok then.
Oh, and to answer your question: Yes, the car could run "OK" with a bent rod. It will eventually become an issue. Just a matter of time (ticking time bomb).
I'd have no reason to doubt the dealer's assessment either. Any time a car goes swimming, a bent rod via hydrolock is a possibility. Water doesn't compress very well, lol...
