The pulley on an automatic is fixed. The pulley on a standard has a "sprag" clutch to allow over run when shifting. That shouldn't cause your problem. That said it might cause the brushes in the regulator to jump and cause some spikes that activate the fault light. It would be more likely to cause the accessory drive belt to squeal/wear/get thrown.
