One thing you might want to do is post this thread in the 944 forum, and see if you can get the contact info of 944 owners along your route, just in case. There may be a whole box of potentially unobtainable parts sitting in someone's garage, and you could be broke down 10 miles away and never know it.
I bought my 944s2 last year in NJ, went over and over all the scenarios of flying out and driving it back, and finally ended up having it shipped. Wound up costing about as much as the flight out and gas + tolls back, but I did miss the experience.
