Congrats on the 944. There's some cool stuff along I40 (pretty much next to the old Route 66). I liked staying at the old 1940s motels in N Arizona/N New Mexico. Not comfortable and not clean but it's a really cool experience. The painted desert and petrified forest are along the interstate near Winslow, AZ (yes, that Winslow). Amarillo has the world famous Big Texan Steakhouse and the Cadillac ranch / Cadillac Stonehenge is a worthwhile stop too.
