I'd have trouble picking a 996 over an air-cooled car if I needed one fun car (with a separate daily), but I think a 996 compliments an air-cooled well. Alternatively, I think if you just had one, the 996 is better for almost all daily driving. I don't have experience in the early 996s, just the post-fried egg ones, but I like them a lot and they are hard to ignore for the money once you've driven a clean, well sorted one.
