Air injectors on 1976 2.0l

I have a '76 912E which the previous owner had renoved the airpump from. I decided to remove the airpump manifold and cap the air injectors (leaving them in the head until I have the time and money to do a proper rebuild). I did this on a '75 914 I owned and it seemed to work fine. The problem is, the air injector on the #2 cylinder head is severely stripped out and leaking exhaust. I'm thinking about removing the exhaust manifold, tapping the upper portion of the head (where the injector shoulder would be), blowing any chips out of the exhaust port, and plugging the hole with a threaded brass plug. Has anyone out there had this problem, or have any other ideas that would avoid dropping the engine and removing the head? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
