I'd say "yes... really" You can do core till you're blue in the face and if you don't eat right and cut back on carbs... Now 6 pack for you!
My normal daily routine included abs at the end of each workout. Cable crunches, decline crunches, hanging leg lifts, and a nice dose of Pilates at the end. Never once did I get or even come close to having a 6 pack because my diet sucked.
