The wire cup holder which goes into the cigarette lighter works well.

However it too has it's quirks, I typically pull it out when I have passengers, because they have a habit of playing with it in the middle of a turn and distracting me. Or worse, making a point of hitting it when getting in.

I know for a fact it isn't in their way, something about the human condition compels people to strike out at inanimate objects when ever an poor excuse can be made. Turning it on it's side doesn't work either, they attack it like yellow jackets fighting over an abandoned doughnut at a cider mill.

Still beats getting coffee all over your self when closing the door.

My door pockets (1977) are made of cardboard and easily deform when exposed to moisture. I'd keep the possibility of spills away from them myself, a leaky Targa roof is exposure enough for me. I'll confess, I used to jam my cup in the door pocket, the left handed location did not fare well for my right handed ways.
