New to 996 ownership... 4 weeks into it with '04 996 AE. Did my oil change a few weeks ago and am waiting for the results of the oil analysis that I did my mail order. Since I have no significant paper work on maintenance, I have no records of any prior IMS replacement or clutch/RMS changes. The area of the RMS is not seeping at this time.
I opened up the old oil filter and inspected it carefully with shop light and magnet. I could not find any metal shaving at all. The oil age is unknown but there was a windshield sticker from a Porsche Specialist from where the car came from (SC) and that would put the age and mileage of the oil about 5 months and 5k.
What I did find throughout the filter were small plastic bits that looked like melted wax... very small and rounded... stick to the filter paper surface. You can see them pictured below. Besides what you see, there may have been 2 or 3 more at that size and possible some smaller that I could not collect or see.
Research indicates this is probably from the timing chain runners and that they are starting to deteriorate. This is my first oil change with the car and I am planning on doing another when I put about 2k miles on it myself and will hopefully not find any more.
Question: does anyone have any experience or knowledge about these ramps failing and how quickly the will go? Based on the amount of plastic I found after 5k miles, is this considered enough to cause alarm or just something to monitor and start saving for the repair in the next 5-10k?
This is my daily driver so I am going through it and doing as much preventative work myself as I can in order to have minimal downtime.
