Yes very cool that you have a pic of your Dad in action, river rat huh?
Those 50 cals were mounted on the top of the coupula of our M48 tanks in Nam.
Its really easy to burn thru a couple of cans of ammo really quickly if someone is rude enough to set off a flair in your parameter wire, or heaven forbid shoot an RPG at you in the night. We would sit behind it on watch at night with a few extra can close to hand.
Yes they can reach out there, or really fill an area closer to hand.
The BAR 30cal also comes to mind as an exceptional light auto. Too.
