We normally use Norton, because our ISP provides it for free. My wife's computer at work had a nasty Rootkit. I use Malwarebytes to kill it off, then Rkill and Malwarebyte Root Removal software t find the last little bits. The Rootkit actually had the ability to block downloading MWB!
I suspect she clicked on an e-mail attachment.
Anyway, Norton apparently failed! I'm leaving MWB on her PC and I activated Windows Defender and seeing how it runs.
Everyone seems to have a favorite, but CNET pretty much rates all of them the same these days.

All AV solutions have the same vulnerability.
They can only prevent what they already know about.
Meaning someone somewhere is going to get hit by it until the providers find it and update their definitions.
And yes, most malware disables the downloading and or installation of solutions.
