The expensive ones are molded to come up the center console or door sill and are not flat. They are a shallow bucket to contain the dirt and water. The cheaper ones are high quality flat mats with deep grooves to retain what you track in but obviously, if you track in enough snow it can over run the edges. I have the mats in my SUV and am pretty satisfied.
