I assume it was business? I assume your business hours aren't all night? The guy can stuff it. I'd say, that if you got an inquiry at 17:45 and you responded the next day at 09:00, that you did well. It's easy these days to get testy when a response isn't instant. My wife often has that sort of reaction, and I remind her that depending upon the company and the query it could be a few hours to a week and still be reasonable.

It sounds like you have a pretty good handle on things, especially if you have 2 or 3 times a day that you often do your correspondence. Anyone that doesn't like it has unrealistic expectations that you won't be able to fix and shouldn't worry too much about.
