I like Raleigh and could live there: Three hours to the mountains or the beach, excellent little airport, etc.
A small town that has both the crunchy Washington and Lee University and VMI side-by-side that I like a lot is Lexington, Va. The down side it that Lexington is a 3 Wood and a long chip from any where. I could live there happily, however.
I have heard good things about Winston Salem and Greensboro but I have no direct experience.

Fresh out of college, I landed a gig doing R&D in IBM's Advanced Communications Division at RTP....lived in Cary....was booming then, and there is no way I could live there now...but that area is as high tech and educated as any place in the world

. Bottom line, NC offers it all...depending upon where you want to live and how.
Paul, I don't actually live in G'boro, and spend most daze on my rural property "out in the country".... otherwise, I'd offer to buy you lunch when you're passing through
