Yes, absolutely - older manuals will still be up to date on techniques. They really have not changed in about the last century or so.

The only bullets I buy are jacketed rifle bullets (I cast all of my handgun and straight walled rifle bullets), and I get those from Midway. I have, on occasion, used Speer and Remington swaged lead bullets for handguns. I've had great success with them when I hold them to the 800 fps range. I get those from Midway as well.

I wouldn't necessarily focus on jacketed or plated bullets for your plinking loads. They are not necessary. Cast or swaged lead bullets will work great and save you some money.
