Good outcome for 'Carl'.
I can tell you from years of experience: there are two stories always. One that is real and that they know and the other that is told to the wife. I've watched dudes lie to their wives right in front of me, knowing full well that I knew the real story.
You can bet here that 'Carl' was on the hook but that he got a break on poor recording. That's also why the ADA went so hard to try to get him to plead out. They knew he did it, they knew he knew he did it, but w/o the corroboration from tape their case would ultimately fail. In other words, they had enough to charge and give it a go but not enough to convict.
This is his time to rethink his life. If he hasn't figured that out, you may want to tell him. Otherwise, this will happen again (or some other stupid crap)
BTW, you are a good friend for sticking with him. Seriously, most folks in that situation don't have that going for them.
