I guess growing up with a brother that traded insults with me all my life made me appreciate Rickles type of insults. He did have a sharp and quick wit. Carson was the master at quick wit, but Rickels was close and would insult anyone. I am sure more than once he started in on someone and then realized he had gone past good natured humor. It was not a scripted performance, it was always off the top of his head.
The story with Frank Sinatra coming to his table is a pure classic. For those not around in Sinatra's era he was the king of show business. It would be like dismissing Elvis with the wave of the hand. I think it is the first video on this thread.
