My wife if considering a new / 2nd career as our kids are in and/or near high school. She is looking to do a 1.5 year community college program that is specifically designed and targeted for the medical coding profession. She has an undergrad degree in geography, but has been stay at home mom for the last 15 years.

It sounds to me like a really good cross-over between the medical field and IT / big data, which should see continued demand. Real world experience with hospitals and doctors offices and insurance requirements make it pretty clear where this is all heading. Anyone know about the profession, and the related work environment and opportunities?
