I took some refresher sessions before I did the road test in the UK, to switch from my Canadian one. Good thing too, because until then I didn't know that left turns (LHD traffic) are not allowed under red (not counting turning greens, naturally). In the beginning it felt like a waste of time, but now I do appreciate it, especially considering how complex (compared to North American grid system) intersections can be.
On the other hand, uncontrolled intersections without a STOP sign means yield, so roll through, and the majority of them are this way. They tend to use the stop sign sparingly, in Oxford there are 2 or 3 stop signs total. As a passenger, I used to think all my friends were bad drivers as we approached intersections at more or less full speed and never came to a full stop.
The same rules apply in Germany and rest of Europe. So, it's the opposite to how I learned to drive: when it's controlled, stop, easy. When it isn't, no need to waste time coming to a full stop at an empty junction (which I used to do in Canada, because that's the law). Like Sammy's California rolling stop, but legal. I think it just makes more sense, just like roundabouts instead of 4-way stops, or highway speed no-limits.
