Speaking of exhaust, NASCAR style, apparently in the mid 60's there were no or little rules governing exhaust or the layout. If I remember correctly it was Richard Petty. / his crew chief who decided to run the exhaust all the back under the rear bumper. Think Plymouth RoadRunner style.
Every time an opponent would get close to draft him, the hot exhaust pointing straight back would disrupt air flow and allow high heat to enter the engine bay / cowl area. This would cause additional drag as well as enough loss of power no one could draft him. I think NASCAR then banned this style ( after 1 race) then dictated what you see today.
