I think 550 spider replicas are a fantastic drive, and really represent something that cannot really be accessed otherwise. 356 replicas also may be made to give a very similar experience to a 356, by virtue of the very real correspondence between the actual parts that make them and the real thing.
As for 911s, most of the really good ones I have driven were tweaked. I will never have a real 2.7 Carrera RS. That is a car that for many years held the crown as the 911 that had the most soul, and a real driver's car. Making something that resembles that drive is really not going to make the Baby Jesus cry, except maybe tears of joy.
I know of guys that run 924s in preservation class concourse. Polish the inside of the exhaust, original tires... Very correct cars.
