One other suggestion I have luck with on transmission studs is to use the correct fitting copper crush washer instead of the steel ones under the nut and torque to spec. Unless everything is perfectly clean, RTV is a gamble at best. The copper seals regardless. If you decide to pull it apart, most of us have found that the all silicone gaskets work very well with no special handling except to be very careful not to over torque them.
