I was in a fraternity at a relatively small school in TN in the '80s. Max number of brothers at any given time was ~50 and I think that makes a difference. We drank a lot of beer and had a lot of fun and most of us graduated with engineering degrees. Like many have said, some of my best friends today are fraternity brothers. Like with a lot of things, many people who denigrate social fraternities don't really know anything about social fraternities.
My life was certainly enriched. In fact, I tell people that I probably learned as much being in the fraternity as I did in school. Leadership, teamwork, working with others, etc.
