If however, I had a set up like some folks down the road - a brick box to hold it all, one guy has a driveshaft of some sort buried in concrete, etc - and it wasn't a trivial job to fix, I would indeed be raising some noise about it.

Metal pipe post. set in concrete. Not just us, both the neighbors we talked to mounted the same. No HOA to answer to. New post office regional manager, a stickler for "rules". What happened, county road dept. dug everything up with a backhoe, must have not refilled when replacing the concrete. One poor neighbor has blacktop completely surrounding his post, laid by the county.

Another funny thing..County did the roadwork 3, maybe 4 years ago. No postal notices until this new postal bureaucrat decided to send out inspection crews...

I'm sure it'll probably end up being on my dime. Just pisses me off that Govt. is so talented at taking our money, then using it to add hassles to our lives. So, decided to have some fun, see if I could sic one government entity onto another. Other neighbors have joined in the effort...

(edit) Most of the neighbors are like me...could be called "elderly", no matter how much we hate that term. So, we should be either digging or hiring labor to repair damage by a county road crew? Actually, I probably wouldn't dig...seems simpler to hire somebody with a portable welder to cut the pipe, weld in an extension or a sleeve of larger pipe.
