IIRC, it's 2 1/4" - the same OD as the poles they sell @ Home Depot etc, and it uses the standard 2 3/8" clamps.

It varies due to proximity to other features, but no further than 7 1/2' apart. Two of the poles are welded to the poles on the pergola, and it's tied to the carport on one end and to the existing fence in the middle and the opposite end. I am tempted to tie it into the shop at both corners as well.

I used 2x6 redwood mounted vertically to each pole, and then 1x12 redwood mounted horizontally. The bottom board that contacts the ground is 2x12 pressure-treated and the very top is 1x8 redwood. Recently I covered the horizontal gaps using 1x4 redwood slats from the backside, so you can't peek through the fence at all.
