Before I watched that part of the video, and once it was suggested that it was for tire pressure, I was thinking perhaps they could compensate for heavier loads (and where those loads were placed) by raising and lowering the pressure, but it appears to have raised and lowered them all simultaneously.

Under ideal circumstances the axles are only a couple feet below the surface of the water where they wouldn't see that much pressure beyond normal. Any deeper and you're swimming to shore and water in the differential would be your last concern. Later models did indeed use the differential housing as part of the pressure pathway reducing much of the exposed plumbing and accomplishes both tasks.
