I also think about my wife's grandmother. During the dust bowl days in Oklahoma they stuck it out and survived somehow. She raised 5 kids on a farm in a few dozen miles outside of Ames, OK. No running water, no electricity, and dust everywhere. She would go out to to the pump and soak some sheets in water so she could hang them up over the doors and windows. They could not close up everything or they would suffocate. Imagine a wood frame farm house with no electricity so not even a fan. If you close the doors or windows then the temp goes up like an attic. Open them up and the house fills with dust. The house filled with dust regardless but even faster with the windows up.
And when it is time to cook dinner you throw a log on the Franklin stove and heat up the kitchen with a fire.
