My parents had just begun their teens during the dust bowl and depression. And they both lived on farms in NE Oklahoma. They never talked much about the dust. Mom only talked about driving grandma out to the fields with lunch and lemonade for the hay crew and helping granddad run the weekly sale barn (auction). Granddad was also one of the small towns barbers. Dad only talked about raising a pig for 4H and winning a prize with it. Then his dad selling it and giving him a new pair of seersucker overalls for it. Dad also did odd jobs like swept up at the barber shop. Never heard anything about what my Granddad on my Dad's side did besides have their farm until later. But it sounded pretty ruff if he sold his son'e prize hog to help make ends meet.
