People have done stranger things. That would be a Mickey Mouse.

There may have been a mound behind the fan and when finally started the air flattened the nest against the back.
If it passes basic tests like compression, etc. that stuff could be clawed and blown out vs removing the CIS. Especially if fan is removed.
